Do You and Your Friends Want to Go to College?

Do Yo ah Your Friends
Unless you are rich, there is a good chance you are
thinking about going to CUNY. Every new student entering
CUNY must take a test to see if they have the reading,
writing, and math skills they will need for college. Anybody
who doesn’t pass this test has to take remedial classes to
bring their skills up to college level. This January the CUNY
Board of Trustees, under pressure from Mayor Giuliani,
voted to eliminate ALL remedial classes at ALL of CUNY’s
4-year colleges and to bar entrance to the 4-year colleges to
any incoming students who need to take remedial classes.
This means that most New York High School students
currently planning to attend a CUNY 4-year college
would not be admitted!
With cops shooting people like Amadou Diallo down
in the street, new prisons being built, and college doors being
slammed in our faces, the time has come to do something to
defend our future. Nobody else will do it for us.

Title
Do You and Your Friends Want to Go to College?
Description
This flier was created by SLAM!'s High School Organizing Committee in 1999 to attempt to recruit high school students to organize to save open admissions at CUNY. Members of the committee passed out these fliers in the morning before school outside Manhattan high schools and asked high school students about their concerns related to access to CUNY.
