Letter announcing the Formation of the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH)

COALITION FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF ASIAN AMERICAN
STUDIES AT HUNTER (CRAASH)
October 30, 2007
To Whom It May Concern:
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian
American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH), a small student group created in response to the inadequate
conditions of the Asian American Studies Program (AASP) at Hunter College.
Currently, the AASP lacks complete support from both Hunter College and the greater CUNY
administration. With a budget of zero dollars, the AASP is given no financial support to expand its program
and flourish as a true academic department. While the offered courses are always high in demand, the
AASP is not capable of offering many other courses listed in the course catalog. There is neither a
permanent department head nor full time faculty, as all the professors are either adjuncts or faculty from
other departments. There is no reason for these conditions to exist in such a diverse college, where the
Asian community stands as the largest ethnic group within the Hunter College student population. Students
who are interested in studying this scholarly field should have the right to learn about the distinct intellectual
experience of Asian Americans.
As concerned students, we urge the administrations of Hunter College and the greater CUNY system to
actively support the Asian American Studies Program (AASP) at Hunter College through: 1) increasing
funding for the program; 2) allocating full-time professors to the program; 3) and allowing more of the
courses enlisted under the program to be offered. Please inform your students of our mission and urge
them to get involved with CRAASH. Together we can rejuvenate the AASP and educate the Hunter
community about Asian American issues.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
Sincerely,
The Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian Atean Studies at Hunter

Title
Letter announcing the Formation of the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH)
Description
In this letter dated October 30, 2007, students announce the formation of the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH). Consisting of eight students, CRAASH organized in immediate response to the inadequate conditions facing the Hunter AASP, including a $0 budget, lack of a permanent department head and full-time faculty, and stagnant course offerings. CRAASH later evolved into a formal student club, though advocating for the AASP has remained part of its central mission.
The Hunter College Asian American Studies Program (AASP) was established in 1993. As the only academic program in Asian American studies in the CUNY system, the AASP offers a minor in Asian American Studies and other resources and programming. The AASP supports scholars, artists, and activists advancing scholarship in the fields of Asian American studies and critical ethnic studies and serves as a resource for New York City's Asian American communities. In 2006, the program was at risk of being cut due to a lack of funding. Students formed the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH) and saved the program within a year. CRAASH is now a student-run club that continues to advocate for the AASP.
