Description
Published in a 1934 issue of Student Outlook, this illustration encapsulates the feelings of many left-leaning student activists towards the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) programs found on college campuses across the country. At City College, the two-year, military science based ROTC program was made initially compulsory for the entire student body shortly after World War I. However, student campaigns against the requirement were successful and ROTC became an elective in 1928.Anti-ROTC sentiment would persist in the subsequent decades, although it was not until the early 1970s and the Vietnam War that student activists successfully forced the program off of campuses. In 2013, the program returned to the CCNY campus.
