Cuts in Financial Aid - More cuts - Criteria by which Work Study
students are decided has been changed. Freddie saw Vivian Gonzalez
(in charge of work study at financial aid) who said they change figures
if they don't believe them. New guidelines make it impossible for many
old Work Study students to get refunded.
Are they at Financial Aid responsible to this administration or to
the City? How to get information about this? Elly said to check with
United Front people to see if they have this information. We will get
statistics and information and this will’ be an issue for the Qs Union.
2. Homosexualdty Course - The booklist for this course was discussed and it was
decided that a few women from this group should go talk to Prof. Girippa, who is
teaching the course about the lack of coverage of lesbians. Renate, Freddie. Elly.

betweeen the three programs should be discussed at a Women's Union meeting.
Although we are all the same people now, hopefully in a few weeks, we
won't be and the Women's Union will be something different and apart from
the 3 programs on campus. This political arm is not related to Women's
Studies program. Feminists who are not related so much to the three prog-
rams need something that grabs them - like financial aid, or course offering
or other issues. :
The Women's Union - we generally thought it would be a major campus organ-
ization. Once we get other people in, they will bring a whole group of
new ideas and issues for the organizjation to address itself to.
*
Some issues that would get Women interested:
(a) TAR Cuts in, part of a larger question of university within the City,
within the State, etc. But Tap as it affects students now.
(b) Wife cannot get financial assistance if husband refuses to pay.
(c) Welfare - TAP payments deducted from Welfare payments
(d) Sexual harrassment and safety on campus
(e) Student's choice of majors? What is degree going to get us?
5. Report from Faculty Council - Freddie was at the last Faculty Council
meeting. There is a new Vice President of something who is in charge of
safety on campus, building and grounds, information flow. Said he was
interested in hearing problems in reference to safety (not academic).
Recruitment of students : The school is trying to get grant to make this

Title
Brooklyn College Women's Union Meeting
Description
The Women's Union at Brooklyn College was an organization comprised of many faculty and staff from the Women's Studies Program, but existed as a separate entity that would tackle political and administrative issues affecting women at the college. These notes from their inaugural meeting reflect the types of advocacy they tackled, from fighting for courses that explored lesbian sexuality to addressing cuts to student financial aid, welfare, and TAP, sexual harassment and safety on campus, and the ways that married women could be excluded from financial assistance.
