COEH Programs
Asthma Management
This program trains community health workers, health advisers,
outreach workers and staff of community-based organizations who
work with children who have asthma and their families.
Community Health Worker Training Program
This comprehensive program for community health workers trains
neighborhood residents to serve as a vital link between community-
based organizations and the community they serve. The program
trains workers to provide education, case management and advo-
cacy for children with asthma and their families. Ge
Consultation to Community-Based Organizations
This program offers consultation and technical assistance to com-
munity-based organizations that seek to add childhood health
activities to their program through planning, assessment , devel-
opment, training, program evaluation and strategic planning serv-
ices to identify the role of the community health worker and de-
velop permanency strategies.
Asthma & Integrated Pest Management
This model program works with residents, resident leaders, and
building managers to identify conditions that lead to pest infesta-
tions and implement strategies to eliminate pests and reduce pesti-
cide use.
Community Lead-Poisoning Prevention Program
This program equips families, community-based organizations and
building owners with an overview of lead poisoning prevention
and other environmental hazards and focuses on strategies which
parents can use to prevent or minimize exposure.

Hazardous Materials and Emergency Response Training
This program educates personnel exposed to hazardous waste
materials and responsible for emergency response in proper pro-
cedures, protocols and comprehending general information out-
lined in the Hazard Communication Standard 1910.120 that will
enable them to save lives, contain hazardous materials incidents,
and protect themselves and others from harm in case of a HazMat
disaster.
Minority Worker Training Program
This program educates young people of color considering jobs in
trade unions and environmental firms of the environmental haz-
ards they may encounter and how to recognize, evaluate and con-
trol exposure to those same hazards. The program also teaches
basic life skills, literacy skills and job skills that will enable these
youth to compete in a changing labor market.
COEH Activities
* — Identify and recruit stakeholders, assess needs, design
training programs and deliver training sessions in
asthma awareness, management and control, and com-
munity health worker training in occupational and envi-
ronmental health.
* Work with municipal and local state agencies, commu-
nity organizations, national, international and local la-
bor unions and private employers to promote access to
and understanding of workplace and environmental
concerns.

ABOUT THE CENTER
Founded in 1986, the Center for Occupational and Environ-
mental Health (COEH) at Hunter College is a multi-discipli-
nary, university-based program whose mission is to promote
safe and healthy communities, workplaces and environmental
conditions through education and research. The Center works
with community organizations, municipal and state agencies,
international, national and local labor unions and private em-
ployers to promote better understanding, access to information
and improved skills in addressing public health, environmental
and occupational concerns.
