Dear Colleague,
By now, you have probably read Chancellor Murphy's comments about
adjuncts which appeared in the November issue of the University Faculty
Senate Newsletter (see below). APTF has been working for improved working
conditions for CUNY part-time faculty since 1982. Our goals are: pro-rata
pay and medical benefits; clear and consistent rehiring and promotion pol-
icies and tuition wavers for undergraduate CUNY courses.
CUNY's faculty is now 40% part-time and this percentage is growing
every year. By using adjuncts as migrant workers, CUNY is not only exploit-
ing adjuncts themselves, but also full-time faculty and, most of all, students.
Despite Chancellor Murphy's expression of concern, letters and phone
calls from APTF have gone unanswered. We are asking all Faculty Senate
members, full-time as well as part-time instructors, to write Chancellor
Murphy and let him know that the employment situation of adjuncts will be
remedied only with deeds, not kind words. APTF also urges the Faculty Senate
to take up the problems of part-time faculty in 1985. It is an issue that
affects the entire university, faculty and students alike.
Thank you very much for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
CHANCELLOR COMMENTS DB ao
ON ADJUNCTS an is,
Commenting on the increasing number of adjunct President . Association
faculty at City University and elsewhere, of Part Time Faculty
Chancellor Murphy designated the increase
"catastrophic" institutionally, in terms of the
ratio between adjuncts and full-time faculty--
a ratio the State Board of Education modified
several years ago.
At the same time he emphasized that he thought
CUNY adjuncts are treated "miserably," so far
as salary and fringe benefits are concerned.
"We need to do something about that," he said.

Description
The Association of Part-Time faculty (APTF) sent out this correspondence to full -and part-time faculty asking them to send letters to CUNY Chancellor Joseph Murphy who had called the adjunct employment situation “catastrophic” but, according to the APTF, failed to return phone calls and had yet to take any action.
