WHO WE ARE
We are 3,500 Adjunct Lecturers and Graduate Assistants employed by CUNY.
We teach and research in the same university yet we rarely meet one another.
We have much in common. All of us are poorly treated by CUNY. We are under-
represented and underpaid. We don't receive basic benefits such as health
insurance, cumulative sick pay, tuition waivers and job security. To improve
our working and living conditions we have begun to organize an independent
trade union.
Adjunct Lecturers and Graduate Assistants are now represented by the Professional
Staff Congress (PSC), a union comprised mostly of full-time faculty and staff.
The PSC has done little so far to improve conditions for part-timers. After a
long and frustrating relationship with the PSC, we have concluded that a separate
union of part-timers would be the most effective way to further our cause.
Part-time faculty and staff at the Universities of California, Michigan, Wisconsin,
Oregon State, Florida State, C.W.Post, Nassau Community College, Hofstra and SUNY
have organized part-time faculty unions. We are now beginning to recruit members
on each of CUNY's campuses. You can join our effort by attending the next general
meeting on April 27 at 4 pm, Room 1027 at the Graduate Center, 33 West 42 Street.

Title
PTU Newsletter (vol. 1., no. 1)
Description
The debut newsletter in 1986 of PTU View, was published by a group devoted to fighting for the rights of part-time staff at CUNY. Included were listed contacts at various CUNY campuses; announcements of several Spring meetings; and a detailed enumeration of the group's various positions on adjunct pay and benefits, as well as larger on various political and budgetary issues. The Part-Time Instructional and Research Staff Union (PTU) was a group of part-time faculty members from across CUNY who challenged the PSC for the right to represent adjuncts.
