"Confession #2349 from Hunter College So my STATS professor started her introduction like “So as
you all know, there’s been a lot of talk about the Coronavirus. As you can see, I am Chinese and if
you’re worried about me having it, you shouldn’t be. I haven’t been to China in years. My husband is
American and I haven’t seen my other Chinese friends ever since the outbreak started. We’ve decided
to reduce our contact with each other to avoid any accidental contractions.” I fucking love professors
with a sense of humor"
"Confession #2331 from Baruch College Dear Dumbasses with the face masks, Can y’all just stop
wearing those face masks? The Coronavirus is not gonna reach you, and even if it does your dumbass
not gonna die from it unless you got a shitty immune system. Honestly, it makes me think y’all have
the virus and makes me want to avoid y’all even more. Thanks"
Confession #2433 from Hunter College uhhh so I was coming home from class today and this dude that
was sitting in front of me kept turning around to look at me and at first I was like oh he's checking me
out that's a first but when I got home and it hit me and I realized oh no he probably thought I had
coronavirus because I'm Asian ... riding trains are kinda weird now because everyone kinda seems on
edge around me and i'm just scared of a hate crime happening tbh ... anyway I hope the virus gets
contained and all of you stay safe --- don't forget to wash your hands <3,,,"
"Confession #2434 from All of Them I overheard a conversation from one of the CUNY trustee. I won't
disclose the school or the person. Basically worse case scenario, CUNY will close all schools and find
arrangements to make classes online. Current online classes will probably be fine cause there's no
reason to cancel that. But I'm assuming classes that have labs and requires in person activities will be
canceled. Most tuition will be refunded. I overheard a conversation from o...ne of the CUNY trustee. I

Confession #2437 from All of Them My professor won't name which school or who obviously told us
they openly are telling professors from their emails they may be closing each CUNY case by case on a
borough basis and that online work to be offered through blackboard. Labs will be made online and re-
worked and exams to be held online if necessary. There is no tuition refunds! The classes will be still
upheld as full accredited courses due to us being half way through the semester.,,,"
Confession #2438 from Baruch College One of my classmates is currently in mandatory quarantine.

"Confession #2445 from All of Them Good afternoon! Many of us are concerned about coronavirus
and the fact that they still have not shut down CUNY campuses, even though many private schools
have closed down. I understand that its a large scale decision for such big commuter schools, but I
believe CUNY officials should make their decisions faster. Please sign this petition:

email co...rnonavirus.taskforce@cuny.edu and ask them to take action. Thank you!"
#2446 from All of Them It’s really fucking annoying that CUNY is refusing to shut down. Like private
campuses are closing and schools like mine (Brooklyn College) are putting up hand sanitizing stations.
Claiming that they have had custodians cleaning all touchpoints on campus. It’s BULLSHIT. Half of
our bathrooms don’t have soap... I haven’t seen not one CLEAN classroom since reports have gone up.
I’m so damn annoyed like shut this shit down for at least a day and clean this shit up!,,,"
"Confession #2447 from All of Them ~Someone who works with the IT dept here. We know that many
of you want physical classes to be cancelled and we're working around the clock to make it happen.
Believe me, when I say I've been on my feet for 8 hours straight. Right now we literally don't have the
capacity to move all classes online yet. It's not as easy as most people think. If more than a quarter of
the students of a small school like Lehman login to blackboard at the same ti...me, it will cause the
system to crash. Heck, many courses do not even use BlackBoard. Simply put, our current servers
cannot handle the load if ALL classes were to be suddenly moved online. That is why you see colleges
giving professors the discretion to move online instead of forcing everyone all at once. We're doing the
best we can with the little resources we have here. If everyone can just be patient we'll have the school
‘distance-learning' capable within a few weeks."
"Confession #2450 from John Jay My CUNY brothers and sisters, I don’t want to hurt none of your
feelings but a lot of you are chicken shits with this whole outbreak going on. Some of you have been
homeless and slept either in the street, in a classroom, shelter or wherever the case may be and came to
school and no one complained. Some of you have done sexual things in public (shoutout to the people
from Brooklyn College and the hood people) and resumed your life like nothing. ...Some of you share
drinks and food with people who you don’t know where their mouth has been. Some of you have taken

workers aren’t immune to all the harmful things that they’re working with wearing those tiny masks,
why do you thing those masks will do you any better? And stop treating asian people like shit, we get

#2454 from Hunter College Gosh I feel so isolated already...I don’t know how I’m gonna

Confession #2459 from All of Them It’s crazy all of ya go to college but are still so stupid. Corona
virus started in China but that doesn’t mean that all Asian people have the virus nor does it mean only
Asian people have it. Your friend Kevin Nguyen is likely to have it just as much as Brad over here.
THE VIRUS SEES NO COLOR. And in case ya are in denial, IT IS RACIST to try to avoid Asians
because you think they have the virus. If seeing an Asian person makes you think the...y have a disease,
shame on you. To break it down plain and simple: 1. Not all Asian people are Chinese but half of ya are
too ignorant to even grasp that fact. 2. Thinking someone has or might have a disease because of their
race is RACIST no matter how you want to say it. 3. I’ve been seeing a lot of hate on Asians through
social media, even violent acts of hate crime towards the elderly or really, anyone that’s Asian. Shame
on you if you witness or even perform these acts of hatred. America was built on the backs of
immigrants including the Chinese. Pick on someone your own size. But kicking a old grandpa from the
back in Harlem, Landing him on his face is not the answer. Spraying air freshener on some Asian male
and threatening to have him leave is not the answer. Targeting people wearing a mask because it makes
you afraid is not the answer. Heck, targeting people not wearing a mask is not the answer. ( saw news
where a old lady at canal st, got attacked for wearing a mask and someone on 34st also got attacked
because they weren’t wearing a mask. Demonstrative of how America’s attack on Asians leaves
everyone vulnerable no matter what they do.) I understand everyone is afraid but racism is never the
way to effectively treat fear. In the meantime, during these trying times, we should be working
together to make this time easier on our people. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE WE GO TO COLLEGE
WE SHOULD BE USING EDUCATION TO OUR UPPER HAND AND TO EDUCATE OTHERS +
SHED LIGHT ON THIS ISSUE. People of color know what it feels like to be oppressed or judged, so
we should work together to reverse this! Shop local, tip well, and eat out an Asian restaurant this
weekend. We should collectively try to stop the blow on so many Asian businesses who have already
taken a huge hit since the corona virus spread. This is going to have a negative lasting effect on so
many families... Meanwhile, keep washing your hands with soap for 20 seconds!! Sorry for the rant, I
saw so many hatred comments coming from both Baruch and Hunter’s fb page it shocked me. We are
considered people with more education and if we think that way, let alone what the rest of America
does. Anyways, to ABG’s and ABB’s we Stan L enjoy the rest of the semester online guys!"
Confession #2462 from Baruch College So Baruch can continue to send us emails about “20% off on
Baruch swag! © and “pot of gold sweeps! Win $500! ©” but we still didn’t get a formal email about
this whole rona situation. I have teachers who still didn’t email us or isn’t responding to us regarding

Confession #2481 from All of Them My dad died from the coronavirus. He was 49 years old and was
in good shape. He did not smoke and only had a mild form of asthma at a young age. My mother is in
recovering stage and may be doing better soon. And I hope that goes well. I will be moving to my aunt
place now I have to move out of the dorm. I had to drop my classes because I can no longer focus.
Please stay safe. This virus is not a joke and please be cautious if you have to go out.,,,"
Confession #2482 from All of Them Many of us wanted to shut down CUNY be of Corona, be we use
public transportation to get to school, be it isn’t safe. It doesn’t conflict with asking for pass/fail and
refunds. If we’re not in school, we shouldn’t be charged “student activity fees” when there are no
activities going on. We shouldn’t be charged for printing credits when the libraries are all closed. We
shouldn’t have to pay for things we’re no longer using or have access to. A...s for pass/fail, everyone
has different circumstances. Not everyone has a quiet space at home. Not everyone has a safe place to
be. Right now it’s about survival, we shouldn’t have to worry about our Professors not being able to
conduct zoom classes. We shouldn’t have to worry about tests being harder when we already have no
control over the situation. We shouldn’t have to worry about how to get resources to continue our
education. We all go to CUNY for one reason or another. Many of us came bc it’s affordable. Well now
that everyone is home (or suppose to be), besides those working an “essential” job, we’re worrying
about paying rent. Worrying about our next meal. Worrying about our families in other places.
Worrying how we’re going to fund our bills. Not everyone has the time and mind right now to devote
to all the changes CUNY is implementing every few days."
Confession #2490 from BMCC I have to agree with the people who explained why we should be
getting the pass/fail option. As mentioned in a few posts here, I have major depression disorder and
panic disorder. It's hard to focus on classes when you're having panic attacks almost every night
because your friends and family keep insisting the end is near. ""Its the plagues from the Bible."" they
say. I wanna drop most, if not all of my classes but the upcoming Fall semester is my la...st. All I
wanna do is stay in my bed and block everything else out, the whole thing is driving me nuts. I can't go
to the hospital for therapy because the patients there have Corona. I can't do virtual counseling because
my parents are home and they are part of the problem. I can't decide if I want to die on my own terms
or just wait it out. One of my closest friends says if anything I should wait it out and we die together if
the end comes but I don't know how much more of this I can take."
Confession #2605 from All of Them Based on all that is happening, would it be safe to say that fall
semester will be online? There would be no doubt that the protests would cause a spike in covid cases.
Will be interesting to see how covid plays out the next 2 weeks.
Confession #2519 from Hunter College I lost two loved ones to coronavirus in the span of 3 days. As
soon as I woke up, I was hit by the news of the second death. I have spent hours crying, trying to
mentally prepare myself to see their send off. Can you imagine watching their funeral through
facetime? I am so upset I wasn't able to talk to them, to hold them. To top it off, I was just informed my
dad tested positive for coronavirus. My aunt and my cousin have it as well. I'm scared of getting the
test done, especially since I have been showing symptoms for a week. I no longer care about school. I
no longer care about anything. To all those still going out- those who are not essential workers, i beg
you to please stop. You are killing those around you."
Confession #2608 from All of Them I work as a TA for one of the CUNY's and we received an email to

feel safe going back to Hunter if it reopens. Throwback to March when I begged 2 of my professors to
stop taking attendance because of covid. Both of them refused. One of them had a PhD in biology and
told me it was almost impossible for the virus to spread to NY. When I escalated the issue, all I was told

windowless room for a hour. If CUNY wants to open, they should be prepared to payout money if
students get sick and have the board members charged and held liable if they don't take the
precautions."
"Confession #2615 from Brooklyn College If we being deadass here, I’m glad quarantine hit. A lot of
crusty cornballs Ill never have to see again, no girls who think they’re hot shit but got an onlyfans in
their bio, no more dusty ‘still owe Moses a dollar” ass professors, no more blowing $60 a week on
food, no more petty wack ass convos I have to have with people I don’t even wanna look at. I get to sit
at my house, do the deed, sleep, order take out, and do literally nothing except work online. The longer
they keep this lockdown going, the more at peace I’ll be. I know y’all probably gonna think I got some
disorder or some shit, but nah, I just really hate people cause they all either waste your time and leave
your life or hurt you and then leave. Thanks and stay safe you guys"
"Confession #2624 from All of Them This ain’t it. It has gotten worse since the pandemic and I can’t
really do anything about it. I have depression and became suicidal long ago. I have anger issues. Okay
everyone does and that’s that’s normal. Mine has gotten hella severe. At this point because of this I
wish I was dead. 1. I’m a brown girl, I’m a first generation college kid and yes rebelling is what I do
best. By being a rebel I felt good that I was myself. 2. Before the pandemic started, whenever I used to
get angry I let it out by taking to some of my friends and four good use of it. I can’t do that anymore
because he’s gotten busier and won’t pick up the phone, apparently “his girl” doesn’t like it when he
talks to his bestfriend. 3. I started smoking and got better. I can’t do that anymore. It’s useless. 4.1
have tried counseling and it didn’t work. 5. I’ve asked my parents also about this and they said that this
‘is not how a girl like you should be acting around here. You are suppose to be carefree and nice and
gentle. You’re not being a good role model for your brother’ wtf does this mean ? 6. I sometimes
wonder who would want a girl like me who come with all these issues. I don’t know where I went
wrong ?"
you all know, there’s been a lot of talk about the Coronavirus. As you can see, I am Chinese and if
you’re worried about me having it, you shouldn’t be. I haven’t been to China in years. My husband is

I don’t know where I went
wrong ?"
Title
Selected Facebook Posts from CUNY Confessions
Description
This item offered a curated selection of informally written Facebook posts documenting student life during the abrupt transition to distance learning in mid-March of 2020. Drawing from the "CUNY Confessions" Facebook group, these compiled posts represented anonymous remarks and reflections submitted by students from multiple City University of New York (CUNY) campuses. Posts were included in the interest of surfacing the unfiltered and unseen domestic, educational, and extracurricular experiences of CUNY students during the university-wide shutdown of physical facilities following the COVID-19 outbreak across NYC.
This item is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) Distance Learning Archive, a group project developed as part of Matthew K. Golds Spring 2020 Knowledge Infrastructures seminar in the Ph.D. Program in English at The Graduate Center, CUNY, in partnership with The Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Certificate Program. The project's goal was to resist or trouble the discourse of catastrophe around the shift to online learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by documenting the lived experiences of students, faculty, and staff across CUNY's 25 campuses. Further, we wanted to document the moment of crisis response with a critical approach to educational technology.
