FROM
THE COLLEGE FOR CHILDREN
On October 31st at Queens Borough Hall, Marsha Perrotte, a GED student here at
LaGuardia and her daughter Samantha, who attends classes at the CFC, testified
at a public hearing on behalf of public education at LaGuardia and how it serves
community needs. Here is an excerpt: "Samantha is also enrolled in LaGuardia in
the College for Children. Instead of leaving Samantha with a babysitter while I
go to school she also attends school with me. I feel confident that she is where
I can have access to her and she to me.....This program is preparing her so twenty
years from now she would be going for her Masters degree instead of a GED."
The Summer '85 enrollment was up to 324 students enrolled in 19 class sections,
and the Fall '85 registration brought us 278 students in 19 class sections.
Look for four NEW COURSES THIS SPRING '86: Beginner Guitar Instruction, ages
8-12; Guitar Instruction for Teens, ages 13-17; Teen Typing Skills, ages 13-17
and Computers for Teens, ages 13-17.

Title
News from The College For Children, January 1986
Description
This January 1986 newsletter from "The College for Children" at LaGuardia Community College provides a brief look into the college's unique program designed for the youth in western Queens. The newsletter includes mention of several course offerings within the program, enrollment figures, and brief summaries of recent events.
The College for Children was created by LaGuardia CC in the early 1980s to serve children aged 4-14 in the surrounding community with emphasis given to underserved populations such as homeless, and Deaf youth. The program was contained within LaGuardia's Continuing Education division and represented just one of the many community-focused efforts at the school.
