Yesterday at 1:30 PM, 150 interested students called SDS to
account on its contention that students had free and open access to
the SS building. 50 SDSers and Ad Hoc Committee members (and 4 fac=
ulty members) barred the way, effectively closing the SS building core
ridor to students. Those 150 students had their hands in their pock-~
ets and interded to use the SS building as their route to McMurray's
office to protest continued occupation of the SS building. After some
yelling and insults back and forth and an SDS promise to hold the build~
ing"forever," the demonstration peacefully dispersed. 50 students
continued on to President McMorray's office (he was out.) They left
10 minutes later after being promised that five representatives would
be allowed to address the campus P & B committee meeting later that
afternoon.
The P & B committee listened attentively to what those five
students had to say, including a plea for the faculty to do something
to end the occupation and to continue plans for structural change in
the University after the occupation was ended. Uniike SDS, the 5
student representation left after making their statements.
These are the things that a Democratic society are made of,
not force and not the decision to consider valid only those decisions
with which one agrees. SDS HAD MADE ITS POINT. Now it must leave
the SS building and drop plans to take over the Academic tower.
Tomorrow the Student Coalition will again ask 50S and the
Ad Hoc committee to allow us to peacefully us the corridor TO WHICH
WE HAVE THE RIGHT OF ACCESS. Our hands will again be in our pockets.
Our intentions will again be communicated before hand to students in
the building so that there will be no misunderstanding possible. We
wish only to pass,
SDS continues to call its demands "non-negotiable." Without
negotiation, we are lost. Our education is in danger, the college is
in denger from hostile legislaters and repressive legislation. We
cannot afford continved disruption. A silent student gives other
students, the administration, the faculty and the legislater the
impression that SDS represents YOU. Exercise your right today to use
the SS building corridor, Come to the rally, 1?PM, Caf Plaza today.

Title
Student Coalition Rally & Peaceful Walk Through
Description
Distributed by the Student Coalition, this handout demands that Queens College students be granted access to walk through the Social Sciences Building. The building, housing President McMurray's office, had been the site of student occupation since March 1969. Those efforts, led by members of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Ad Hoc Committee were pointedly criticized in this flier distributed on May 16th.
Queens College's Student Coalition belonged to the larger New York Regional Coalition of Students and Faculty, an organization of anti-protest groups from campuses across the New York metropolitan area. These students frequently came from varying sides of the political spectrum and stood firmly opposed to campus disruptions brought on by other more radical students.
