Dear Irwin Polishook, Richard Boris, and Frank Annunziato:
I am writing on behalf of a new group of adjunct representatives from Baruch, BCC,
BMCC, Brooklyn College,City College, Hunter, John Jay, New York City Technical
College, Queens and York to request a meeting with you. There are a number of
adjunct issues which we would like to talk about.
We would like to solve the problems the PSC has recording information about new
members, arranging to have dues deducted from their paychecks, and putting them
on the mailing list. We found that many adjuncts who joined the union before
December did not receive ballots, although some of them did receive membership
cards and mailings. Some have never had dues deducted from their paychecks.
There are also problems when adjuncts move from one campus to another, as we
frequently are forced to do.
We need more information about part-timers. We would like to know the number
who are currently union members, and we would like to know a great deal more
about ourselves.
We are also concerned about the lack of outreach to adjuncts. Many tell us they are
unaware they can join the union, know little or nothing about their rights and
benefits, and feel they are peripheral in the university, despite our overwhelming
numbers and majority teaching role. This is true for adjuncts who teach nine or
more credits a semester as well as for those who teach one course in the evening.
The situation of adjuncts cries out for strong union action.
I would appreciate a call at the number below so we can arrange a time to meet. The
best time for us is the week of June l6.2nz affeus)en ;
In solidarity,
Ingrid Hughes

Title
A letter from the CUNY Adjuncts Unite!
Description
In a concerted effort to unite across campuses, CUNY Adjuncts Unite! (CAU) organizers wrote a letter to the Professional Staff Congress (PSC) leadership in June 1997 about their concerns, which included poor outreach and a lack of information about new members. CAU expressed concern that, in addition to new members reporting not having had their dues deducted and not receiving ballots, many adjuncts were unaware of their right to join the union.CUNY Adjuncts Unite! (CAU) was an independent coalition of CUNY part-timers, founded in 1997.
