I aw pleased to inform you that The Ford Foundstion has approved a grant
of $49,850 to Tne Research Foundation of the City University of New York for
support to mainstream new research on women and minorities into the liberal
arts curriculum of New York City's community colleges. This grant is being
made in response to the proposal submitted with Ms. Mary Brown Parlee's
letter of June 13, 1983, countersigned by Ms. Paula Carfen, as revised and
supplemented by Ms. Parlee's September 23, 1983 letter, co-signed by Mr. Alan
Gartner, and oy Mr. Gartner's letter of May 9, 1984. It ts understood tnat
this project will be carried out by the Center for the Study of Women and
Society.
These terms apply to your organization's use of the Foundation’s grant:
Grant funds will de available over an eighteen-month period beginning
March 1, 1984.
Payment of the grant funds will be made in full after receipt ay tre
Secretary of the Foundation of a countersigned copy of this letter. To
facilitate your receipt of the payment check, please indicate on the
countersigned copy the name of the official of your organization to whom tne
check is to be sent.
Under United States law, Ford Foundation grant funds may be expended only
for charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes. Tris grant is
made only for the purposes stated in this letter and the documents referenced
above, and it is understood that these grant funds will be used for such
purposes substantially in accordance with the attached approved budget. It is
also understood that no substantial variances will be made from the budget
without tne Foundation's prior approval in writing. Any grant funds not
expended or comitted for the purposes of tne grant, or within the period
stated ebove, will be returned to the Foundation.

A written report signed by an appropriate officer of your organization is
to be furnished to the Secretary of the Foundation at the end of the grant
period. As the period of the grant exceeds one year, interim reports are to
be furnished annually during the grant period, in addition to the final
report. These reports should contain: (1) a narrative account of what was
accomplished by the expenditure of funds, including a description of progress
made toward achieving the goals of the grant; (2) a financial accounting,
according to the line-item categories of the attached approved budget, which
has been certified correct by the responsible financial official of your
organization; and (3) copies of any publications resulting from the grant
wnich have appeared or are in preparation. It is expected that these
narrative and financial accountings will be submitted as a single report.
In the application of its resources to serve the public interest, the
Foundation gives high priority to the realization of equality of opportunity
for ali members of society. Accordingly, it is the Foundation's expectation
that in carrying out this grant your organization will take appropriate
affirmative-action steps with respect to women and disadvantaged minorities.
® The Foundation may monitor and conduct an evaluation of operations under
this grant, which may include a visit from Foundation personnel to observe
your program, discuss the program with your personnel and review financial and
other records and materials connected with the activities financed by this
grant.
The Foundation will include information on this grant in its periodic
public reports. The Foundation may also refer to the grant in a press
release, in which case a copy would be sent to you in advance. If you wish to
make your Own press announcement, please consult with the Foundation's Office
of Reports.
If this letter and the attacned budget correctly set forth your
understanding of the terms of this grant, will you please indicate your
organization's agreement to such terms by having the enclosed copy of this
letter countersigned by an appropriate officer of your organization and
returned to the Secretary of the Foundation. It is also understood that by
countersigning this letter your organization confirms that there has been no
change in its qualification as an organization exempt from income taxation
pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Iaternal Revenue Code or its
classification as not a private foundation. If any change occurs, please
notify the Foundation.
In all correspondence coacerning this grant, reference should be made to
the grant number designated on the first page of this letter.

This June 19, 1984, letter from the assistant secretary of the Ford Foundation, Diane L. Galloway, to the executive director of the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (CUNY) served to inform CUNY of the approval of a $49,850 grant to the Center for the Study of Women and Society (CSWS). The grant , which would be available to CUNY over eighteen months beginning on March 1, 1984, was intended for use by CSWS to support an effort to mainstream new research on women and minorities into the liberal arts curriculum of New York City's community colleges.
Since 1977, the Center for the Study of Women and Society (CSWS), Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY) has promoted interdisciplinary feminist scholarship. The Center’s research agenda focuses on the intersectional study of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and nation in societies worldwide. The Center co-sponsors the Women’s Studies Certificate Program and, most notably, hosts the only stand-alone Women’s and Gender Studies MA Program in New York City.
