INTRODUCTION
The growth of lesbian and gay studies has been explosive over the last
decade, the scope and breadth of the work produced, astonishing. Hun-
dreds of books and articles have appeared on various aspects of lesbian
and gay history, politics and culture—work that has transformed our own
sense of who we are and has begun to convey to a larger audience the
challenging specialness of our lives.
Given this sudden upsurge, it has been difficult for even the commit-
ted specialist in gay and lesbian studies to stay abreast of the outpouring
of new scholarship. And graduate students considering lesbian and gay
studies as a career have found it difficult to identify faculty members, uni-
versities or regions of the country that have developed a critical mass of
researchers in the areas of their special interest. What has been sorely
needed is some sort of systematic listing of those at work in this bur-
geoning new field, a coherent, if preliminary charting of the waters.
This Directory is meant to fill that need. It is the product of several
years of work, and for the past year has consumed the energies of the Cen-
ter for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) Publications Committee. We
have, over the years, done everything we could think of to circulate our
Directory form — from including it in newsletter mailings, to leaving
stacks on conference tables. We have even contacted a number of schol-
ars directly, after noting their surprising absence from early lists.
As a result of these efforts we are pleased to be able to offer this
Directory of some 600 scholars working in gay and lesbian studies. To
facilitate the use of the Directory, we have not only listed the entries
alphabetically but also by academic field, institution, and geographic
location, appending as well up to four bibliographic items for each schol-
ar. Our hope is that this Directory will bring some coherence to an emerg-
ing field which has thus far been expanding in a happily chaotic fashion.
Though this is a pioneering effort, we make no pretense to it being a
definitive one. Absolute comprehensiveness has not been possible
because of the rapidly evolving nature of the field, and the fact that we
have had to rely on voluntary responses to our Directory form (which also
accounts for inconsistencies in the format of the bibliographic entries).
Our hope is that with each new edition—we plan one every three years—
we will be able to better approach completeness. To that end, we have
included a form at the back of this volume, and we hope that anyone not
listed will quickly send in the requisite information.
We believe this Directory will prove an important tool for facilitating
communication between scholars already working in the field or hoping
to enter it. And that, in turn, will help to guarantee the secure place of les-
bian and gay studies in academic life—and in the consciousness of the
country at large.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The primary responsibility for this Directory has fallen to the 1993-4
CLAGS Publications Committee: Lucile Duberman, Martin Duberman,
Jeffrey Escoffier and John di Carlo. But over the years, and sometimes at
critical points, a number of other individuals have made important
contributions. The Publications Committee especially wants to thank:
Luke Doles, Dan Evans, Seymour Kleinberg, Greg Kucher, Matt Rottnek,
and Catherine Sears. Elaine Tannenbaum helped design the directory and
grants from the Bills Foundation (Bill Hibsher and Bill Johnson) and the
office of Assemblywoman Deborah Glick have helped to absorb the costs
of bringing this volume to publication.

Title
CLAGS Directory of Lesbian and Gay Studies
Description
“We believe this directory will prove an important tool for facilitating communication between scholars already working in the field or hoping to enter it. And that, in turn, will help to guarantee the secure place of lesbian and gay studies in academic life–and in the consciousness of the country at large.” – Martin Duberman July 1994 This item is an excerpt from the CLAGS Directory of Lesbian and Gay Studies. Produced by CLAGS, this directory was an attempt to create a comprehensive list of all scholars actively working within the burgeoning field of gay and lesbian studies. In this early era of the Internet, this directory, the first of its kind offered a way for lesbian and gay scholars to learn about and contact one another. In this excerpt, roughly 600 scholars are organized by academic discipline. Other sections of the directory organize the scholars by institution and offer a more comprehensive look at the research of the individual scholars. Although formally instituted at the CUNY Graduate Center in 1991, CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies was first conceived 5 years earlier by Martin, Duberman, one of the first historians to embrace the, then infantile, field of Queer Studies. Duberman sensed the need for a formal center devoted to queer research. As the first university-based center for LGBTQ research, CLAGS continues to demonstrate its dedication to advancing Queer Studies, by hosting public events showcasing queer research and sponsoring fellowships to support queer scholars. Among its many notable contributions, CLAGS annually puts on at least one major conference and holds the Kessler Award Lecture every fall to celebrate a queer scholar who has made a notable contribution to the field of queer studies.
