COMMITTEE FOR P/T PERSONNEL SET UP
At the Delegate Assembly meeting on January 24
1974 PSC officially approved a Committee for
Part-Time Instructional Staff. Those elected were
the following: Bill Leicht, (BCC) Vice President
for Part-Time Personnel, Chair; David Allen, (B)
Sidney Cohen (L); Claude Campbell (SICC) Secre-
tary of PSC; Christine DeMers (SICC); Stuart
Elenko (BCC); Lester Garrett (H); Arlene Louis
(SICC); Irwin Polishook (L) Vice President of PSC
Aleiandro Ramirez de Arellano (Q); Sumner Rosen
B) Member of PSC Central Grievance Committee;
artha Zebrowski (CCNY); Belle Zeller (B) Presi-
dent of PSC. Omitted by error was the name of
Howard Negrin (JJ) who may be expected to be
added at the next meeting of the Delegate Assem-
bly in February.
The Committee for Part-Time Personnel, as many
readers already know, has been acting as a pro-tem
body during the last half year to initiate and sup-
port the interests of part-time personnel in many
ways. We have been working on dues reduction,
on possible medical insurance programs, on griev-
ance and contract enforcement, and on increasing
the level of representation of part-time personnel
in the union.
Our committee now has a wide variety of back-
grounds and interests. David Allen is Chairperson
of the Adjunct Faculty Association (a membership
‘organization of part-time CUNY personnel). Stuart
Elenko teaches at Bronx High School of Science
and was formerly a UFT Chapter Chairman there.
Arlene Louis is a practicjag psychotherapist and
has had extensive grievance experience. Sidney
Cohen is a professional writer and a member of
the Executive Committee of Lehman College Sen-
ate. He also acts as the backup member of the PSC
Negotiating Committee for Bill Leicht. Lester
Garrett is a graduate student in Philosophy with
extensive organizing experience. He is also a
member of the part-time negotiating backup team
and Secretary to the Adjunct Faculty Association.
Alejandro Ramirez de Arellano is a practicing psy-
chotherapist. Sumner Rosen, Director of ‘he Insti-
tute for Public Administration, is a professional
arbitrator and chairperson of the Academic Free-
dom Committee of the American Civil Liberties
Union. Martha Zebrowski is a political scientist
and a member of the Negotiating Sub-committee
on Adjunct and Part-Time Issues.
CONTRACT NEGOTIATION PREPARATIONS
Dr. Zeller, PSC President, convened the Negotiat-
ing Committee on Thursday, January 31, 1974 to
begin preparations for the negotiations coming in
one year from now. Parttimers do not need under-
lining to understand the importance of this work.
Your team so far is made up of Bill Leicht, a mem-
ber of the Negotiating Committee; Sidney Cohen,
his backup; and Martha Zebrowski and Lester
Garrett, research. :
We need help in developing data for the negotia-
tions. {!f you can help or can suggest someone
else, please call Lester (765-7946) or Martha
(864-1700 extension 1505).
Our negotiating strength depends on you now. If
you become active in your chapter, run for office,
AND VOTE we will be bargaining with the power
you give us.

PART—TIME MEMBERSHIP DRIVE BEGINS
lf a sizable percentage of us part-time personne!
joined the union would our support of and claim
on it be more convincing? Some of us believe so,
and your vice-president has therefore drawn up a
package of materials for enrolling part-time person-
nel.
These membership materials are in the hands of
each Chapter Chairperson or his Membership Chair-
person and will be distributed by them to the
the department representatives in mid-February.
Please give your department “rep’’ or your Chap-
ter Chairperson a call and offer to help him. An
extra copy of this newsletter is enclosed for you to
pass on to a prospective member or to post.
YOUR “PART—TIMER” NEEDS AN EDITOR
This newsletter must find an editor if you wish to
continue to learn of events in the union which
affect your job. Our previous editor resigned
because of personal responsibilities and the vice-
president simply cannot represent you on several
key PSC committees and edit ‘‘The Part-Timer”’.
If you will help with the newsletter or will serve
as its editor, olease call Bill Leicht (884-8975) or
Beryl! Weinberg (354-2353).
MEETING, COMMITTEE ON P/T PERSONNEL
The next meeting of the Committee on Part-Time
Personnel will be held on Thursday, March 14 at
3:00 p. m. at the local offices, Suite 620, 25 W. 43
St. The agenda will include a review of negotia-
tion preparations, a proposal for a cross-campus
unit for part-time personnel and a proposal for a
contributory medical plan for part-time personnel.
CRITICIZES P/T VICE—PRESIDENT’S VIEWS
Dear Mr. Leicht:
| want to object strongly (as adjunct asst. prof. at
Lehman) to the line taken in your first editorial
for the PSC Adjuncts. The PSC negociating [sic]
team sold the adjuncts down the river in the last
BHE round - a $1.00 per hour raise spread over 3
years!! Really! 40% of CUNY staff are adjuncts &
you‘re kidding yourself if you think the BHE will
hire us full time. All they want is for us to teach
the dog courses for cheap wages (max. $4000/year)
while ‘‘waiting’’ driving a taxi cab.
| for one am not marching in a picket line with full-
time people until | see some positive sign the PSC
is going to halt this type of exploitation by the
BHE.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Stephen H. Plagemann

[Editor’s note: The writer’s view is common
among part-time personnel. It is also ultimately
self-defeating. If we believe we are badly repre-
sented, we don’t join PSC and vote on our
representatives and they in turn owe nothing to us
and may freely ignore our interests. | do see a
“positive sign’, however, in our representation on
key committees and more good news is coming.]
