NATION OF ISLAM AT YORK
By: Teddy C. DuBose
In his October 21st speech, Brother
Minister Victor X (Lightburn), minister of the
Nation of Islam, pointed out that the Nation
of Islam was determined in its efforts to
bring the Black family together. Together
not only as a people, but together as a na-
tion. Minister Victor X said that God’s aim
is to see that the Blacks become independent
and are able to build for self. Minister Vic-
tor pointed out that the White man has al-
ways been an enemy of Blacks and that the
White man never wanted the Black poeple
free. From the slaveships to plantations,
Whites have treated the Black man ‘‘worst
than beasts of the fields.’’ Minister Victor
pointed out that the White man has stripped
Blacks of their knowledge of self “in order
to destroy African Roots and in order to
rule Blacks.” Whites rationalized their con-
duct by saying that without roots Blacks
would not have a motivating factor for pro-
gress. In fact, as minister Victor pointed out
the sole reason why the Black family is the
way it is today stems from or is a direct re-
sult of what went on, in slave plantations.
Blacks have a glorious history. Because of
Whites, who didn’t even allow slaves to pray
to their own gods, Blacks have been made to
accept Christianity, White homes and other de-
humanizing racist conditions. Minister Victor
made it clear that there is no real difference
between plantation life and todays ghetto life.
He said that the Black man still has the same
mentality. In plantation life breeding was the
only way a male slave could prove his mascu-
linity. In todays ghettos, Black men prove
their masculinity by having more than one
woman. In both situations Blacks have looked
to whites to take care of children and Black
women. Minister Victor referred to Whites as
“European Freaks’, who believe in ‘‘sex sex
sex”, ultimately making sex a filthy things
He also pointed out that Whites have caused
many Black men to become timid, but through
constant building up of Black women, have

STOKELY AT THE STOREFRONT MUSEUM
By: Annette Hunt and Wm. T. Atkinson
The seminar started out being late, (col-
ored people’s time) and the auditorium was
not full, (colored people’s time again)! That’s
what Blacks are now suffering from, cuz we
ain’t on-time.
When it finally did start, a film called
“Black Power. Future of the U. S. A.” was
shown. It featured various civil rights leaders,
ranging from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Mal-
colm X. The film was basically about the
Black struggle in America toward racism. Also,
it enforced the idea of Black Power and keeping
the ideology alive.
After the film, Stokely did a together lec-
ture on his beliefs and told us what he was
doing. He expressed his desire for some feed-
back from the audience, which he did receive
to a large extent. The only problem that we,
the writers, feel that he went so far, got the
feedback, and got no farther, which was disap-
pointing. This man has so much to offer, and
we only got a cupful. It went something like
this:
Stokely told us what he was doing now,
in and out of Africa, but first he reflected on
a little history, our history. Black history
flows in two directions:
1. Immobilization-“‘blacks ain’t doin’ noth-
ing” later changed to Inspiration- black con-
sciousness that is spreading to all parts of
the globe; the main reason being that blacks
want to be free.
2. Oppression- a reality, solution - try to
do best under the conditions instead of
copping out.
His solution to the problem is a little more
complex: It is the A. A. P. R. P. (All African
People’s Revolutionary Party), the organization
for Pan-Africanism. The A. A. P. R. P.’s base
is in Africa, but their ideology is widespread
all over the world, (or is in the process of being
spread), this in time will bring unity within
our race,
(continued on page16)
(continued from page 12 )
After whetting our minds with the taste
of his organization, he led us back. Taking
us to the 60’s, he brought out the fact that a
spontaneous revolution in that time would have
been a good action. The country was politi-
cally and militarily unstable and would not
have been able to deal with a revolution. Now
in the 70’s the country, (having pulled out of
problems) is ready to deal with one. If a suc-
cessful one is to come about, it must be care-
fully and scientifically planned. The time was
there, we just missed the boat.
Bringing us back to ourselves, Stokely told
us that it is necessary to have unity within,
after all, that is what makes any kind of rela-
tionship This Black unity would serve as a co-
hesive force, internally and externally.
We must, with unity, out it towards one
purpose to achieve our goal. Our goal must be
clear and specific in our minds. Therefore, we
must be objective in our seeing, listening and
analyzing of our goals. To sum this up, we
must have a clear ideology.
Stokely asked for the audience’s responses
and questions on his lecture. The feedback was
good, and we came up with this definition for
our ideology:
1. A way of living
2. A systematic interpretation of
reality
3. Eternal
4. Common Philosophy
5. A way of reaching goals
6. Scientific method
7. It must deal with economic, social
history ‘
8. Cultural
9. Dynamic
10. Perception of reality that allows us
to change a reality
*In order to be a revolutionary, to have a
revioution, you must not be afraid to sit down
and study; you cannot be afraid.
All of this information and ideas were
permeating through our brains and we seemed
to have gone off for a while into the beyond,
so Stokely brought us back to the present,
and tied up these ideas. The history of
this group, and their goals ties in directly
with .this ideology, because it is the ideology
Of The. A. kare
The A, A. P..R. P. wants to be a
mass party, (they are in the process of ac-
complishing that at the present time). In
order to let others know about themselves,
they propagandize among the masses, (we
were one of the masses). The cadres, (sol-
diers) are building up their numbers; their
goal is Pan Africanism; their ideology Nkru-
mahism. They feel that they must gather
energy through the masses of people and
channel energies towards that particular goal.
Africa has been and still is being exploited,
if the goal is reached, the exploitation will
be stopped.
QUESTION AND POINTS BROUGHT UP
|. Black people should be fighting against
capitalism now in America.
2. The question of dialectic conflicts was
brought up. Answer: The history of capital-
ism shows that because of slave trade, the
need for capital made people very greedy,
therefore, slave trade became very popular.
Because we were seperated from Africa, we
must see ourselves as Africans first. One of
his suggestions to this question of identity
was that black people must have more dia-
logue/discussion among ourselves. We must
have a proper understanding of ourselves.
3. Do black people have a common culture
with the people in Africa, or are we separate
from Africans?
Answer: Black poeple must not make a dif-
ference among the Black race, no matter
where we are situated. We are all Africans
| AM A MAN / YOU ARE A MAN / WE ARE MEN!
How can we say we are a man if we continue
to let our women and children suffer. If we
continue to let the system dehumanize our
women and children. How can we be mad at our
women if they marry a Whitey or what we call
the Devil, when all they are saying by their
actions is we are not acting as a man should.
If we cannot offer our women protection, then
our women must go where protection is to be
obtained. If we continue to put our women. in
the street and on the corner instead of providing
a house and place to live, then she must go
where these things exist. If we cannot give Our
children clothes and an education of themselves.
if we cannot make them smile because they
are alive. if we cannot give Our Children a
Pride in themselves and in Us as Black Men,
form the knowledge they obtain of Our African
Past and Our present actions as their providers.
if we cannot give these things to Our women
and children, then we are not acting as a Man
should act. It is time that the Black MEN on
this earth start fighting for their Black MAN-
HOOD, his or Our women and children lives
depend on it.
There is no more MAN on the face of the
earth, than the Black MAN. There are only a
few now that will put their lives on the line, to
protect the Black women and children of this
world. | say few, because the people of this
white system have killed or jailed most of them.
This is not to say that we are not Men, but to
say that we are not acting like or being Black
Men. If we are, how come there are so many
Black Children living in the street, with no home

to go to. Thereis, because there is not enough
done by the Black Man to prevent it! If words
can not do it, then we must stop putting it into
words, and start putting it into action; whatever
action may be needed.
It is time that we not only stand and walk
tall, but make Our actions as Strong as Our

them LOVE, and RESPECT and LOVE they

The result of this can be seen in children,

the Nation of Islam is the Most economically
stable Black organization in America, which is
due to the strict adherence to the laws of
God, which are “natural laws.”’ Finally, min-
ister Victor pointed out that marriage in the
Nation of Islam is beautiful, because it is

because the marital relationship is governed by

4. What is one main common thing in
Black American Culiue?
Answer: We are all struggling for the same
thing.
5. What are the cadres in America to do
with their knowledge, after having studied?
Answer: They must obtain as much political
power in America, then channel these influ-
ences for Africa -(he made a comparison to
the Jewish Peoples, and the power that they
hold). The main goal of these cadres is the
freedom of Africa. Their struggle is against
imperialism. He feels that the Black man m

Spirit Magazine, December 1974
Description
This excerpt from the December 1974 issue of York College's Spirit Magazine features student-produced artwork, poetry, and journalism. A self-described "third world publication," the magazine typically focused on the needs and concerns of York's large black student population. One article from this excerpt describes a talk given by noted civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael following a screening of "Black Power: Future of the U.S.A." at the Storefront Museum, an institution founded three years earlier with the mission of promoting African-American culture in Queens. Carmichael's talk largely focused on his Pan-African organization (A.A.P.R.P) though the article's authors mention other questions and points brought up at the lecture. Another article summarizes a speech given on campus by a minister from the Nation of Islam.
