RE: Adjunct Office Hours
As you may recall in the past negotiations the union strongly
endorsed payment to adjunct faculty for office hours in
addition to their contractual salaries for instruction. The PSC
position recognized the academic value of outside the
classroom counseling and contacts with students as well as
the equity of fully compensating adjuncts for their
professional service to the university programs. In the
absence of a contractual right to office hour compensation,
there is no prohibition on specific college arrangements which
provide compensation to adjuncts when it serves to enhance
academic programs on individual campuses.
There is no reason why each school could not choose to pay
adjuncts for regularly scheduled office hours. If there is
interest on your campus to do this, please inform the PSC
immediately.
Absent any practice which pays adjuncts for office hours, the
scheduling of office hours remains voluntary for part-time
faculty members. Adjuncts should not be compelled to
conduct office hours, if they do not desire to do so. | ask you
to advise our colleagues accordingly.

Title
Adjunct Office Hours
Description
In an October 14, 1998 memo sent to Professional Staff Congress (PSC) chapter chairs, President Irwin Polishook referenced past negotiations in which the PSC had endorsed payment for an adjunct office hour but failed to secure a contractual right to office hour compensation. The memo pointed out that the individual schools could have chosen to pay adjunct faculty for regularly scheduled office hours.
