How will adjunct titles be assigned?
The slotting of an individual into the appropriate adjunct
rank will be a continuation of current SGS appointment
‘procedures for those persons currently on staff. However,
new appointees: will be expected to meet “rank" qualifica-
tions in accordance with Board Bylaws.
Does the slotting of adjunct personnel as indicated in
Article 13.4 require that all appointments be made by
the departmental appointments committee?
The matter of appointment by departmental committees is
a matter for local campus determination in accordance with
the policies prevalent within the college.
Does a Board of Education title have any bearing on. the
slotting of an individual in ai ad juncer tueles
No. There is no mandated direct relationship of college
titles to Board of Education titles.

Are counselors considered teaching or non-teaching person-
nel for the purpose of the use of the Lecturer title?
Counselling (psychological or curricula) is not considered
a non-instructional function.
What title may be used to employ off-campus people to
perform SGS administrative duties?
The appropriate civil service title or a HEO series title
is appropriate.

May a Deputy Chairman in the SGS continue to receive a $l
per hour supplement for administrative duties?
The contract is silent on this matter. It is recommended
that the Deputy Chairman be paid the rate required by the
contract for the relevant rank.
If a man currently is a lecturer and does not have a PhD,
but has been previously paid at a rate which was appro-
priate for a PhD, where do we slot him now?
While each case must be considered individually on the
basis of academic qualifications or equivalencies, for
current employees prior practice determined the individual's
new slot. There is no intention to correct a salary "down-
ward". However new appointees will be expected to meet
rank qualifications.
Where hourly lecturer rates were increased in summer session
1969, may these rates be rolled back to the pre- Rare
spring '69 condition?
No. The September 1969 rate is to be the basis upon which
the increase is to be applied.
Can “adjunct" salary rates be paid now even though the ef-
fective date of the new adjunct titles is July 1, 1970?
A Lecturer hired to teach in SGS on 2/1/70 would continue to
be titled Lecturer, slotted into the proper rank, and paid
accordingly. If such a person continued to teach in the
-following Fall semester only his title would change.

fractional schedules?
Yes, but only for the remainder of this fiscal year.

This information notice, circulated by the United Federation of College Teachers (UFCT) in 1969, explained contract provisions and more specifically the new classification of titles which was to have been fully implemented by 1970. Beginning with the question: “How will adjunct titles be assigned?” the document, explained how CUNY would transition from using the title lecturer to using adjunct and what “rank” qualifications new appointees were expected to meet.
